Sustainable Communities Act - write to your councillor
At our meeting on 16th September 2008, Steve Shaw from Unlock Democracy urged us to write
to our borough and county councillors urging them to 'opt in' to the Sustainable Communities Act.
Below is a sample letter which can be used as a guide. Please feel free to compose your own letters
as they will be more effective. Also please get other people to write too - the more the better
Note: You can find out who your Herts County Councillor is by going to this
HCC webpage and looking at the list
of councillors or entering your post code.
You can find your Dacorum Borough Councillor is by taking a note of your Berkhamsted borough Ward from the above
HCC webpage, then going to the
DBC webpage.
Sample letter:
Dear Cllr [your councillor's name]
Re: Using the Sustainable Communities Act
As a local resident I am writing to you to urge you to please do all you can to ensure that the
council decides to 'opt in' to the new Sustainable Communities Act process when invited to by
central government in October this year.
The Act is great news for all of us locally. For the first time we have a law that gives local
government and local communities the power to drive central government policy and action on
reversing community decline and promoting sustainable communites.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
[your name]
[your address]
Please send copes of any replies you receive to Local Works Campaign Co-ordinator,

Thanks for your help to ensure the Sustainable Communities Act is a success!
